POWDER SPRINGS, GA. – February 05, 2015 – Small business owner, Boy Scout Master, and Powder Springs City Council member, Al Thurman today officially announced and launched his campaign for mayor of Powder Springs in the municipal general election on November 3, 2015.

“Although I am proud of the accomplishments of our Council, city, and its communities, this campaign is about the future of Powder Springs and a new direction for our city.” said Thurman. “I am eager and ready as a cooperative Mayor to bring strong positive growth to our city, and just as strongly committed to stepping up our game to compete for economic resources. With progressive development and forward-thinking leadership, Powder Springs will achieve its potential to be a multi-faceted, vibrant community in Cobb County,” he said.

Successful owner and CEO of Superior Landscaping Inc. and respected community leader, Thurman was elected in 2002 to represent Ward 2. During his Council tenure, Thurman authored a proposal to secure funds and build the Ron Anderson Community Recreation Center at Wild Horse Creek Park. He also led the city’s SPLOST-funded project to replace the Hopkins Road Bridge and improve pedestrian links to the Silver Comet Trail. In addition, Thurman has served as Council liaison to essential city services, and chaired the Keep Powder Springs Beautiful Committee, sponsoring initiatives to further develop the city’s public green spaces.

Thurman resides in Powder Springs with his wife, Jackie, of 43 years. Together, they have raised and educated four daughters and continue to enjoy quality family time with four grandchildren. Thurman and his family are members of Mt. Ephraim Baptist Church, where Al teaches Sunday school and coordinates the church’s international mission, building schools and clinics in West Africa. Actively involved in Mt. Ephraim’s youth program for 12 years, Thurman has been recognized for his advanced leadership abilities by the Boy Scouts of America.
